| Rovio has just announced that over one billion copies of the hit game Angry Birds have been downloaded. |
Angry Birds has also spawned tons of merchandise, a theme park and is even going to be made into a TV show and possibly a movie. But what makes this game so engrossing?
"A combination of many things," says Peter Vesterbacka, Chief Marketing Officer at Rovio. "(it is) optimized for touch, has great characters and everybody loves the birds." The birds, whose eggs are stolen by pigs need to pursue the pigs using their unique powers and destroy their defense structures. People who play Angry Birds need to complete all the levels and some play the game over and over to kill more pigs with fewer birds in order to achieve the three stars for a perfect score.
Rovio was founded after three students including Niklas Hed, CEO Mikael Hed’s cousin and now Rovio’s COO, won a game-development competition sponsored by Finnish mobile phone maker Nokia and Hewlett-Packard CO.
The company states, "This is only the beginning of our story, keep your eyes peeled for what’s coming up next from Rovio!"
